Korea University hosted the 9th Senior Staff Meeting (SSM) from March 14 to 16, 2012. A total of forty-nine delegates from 30 APRU member universities attended the meeting in Seoul. This year's theme, "APRU-Ten Years Ahead", focused on key topics relating to the framework of APRU's new strategic plan.
The 9th SSM comprised a panel on "The Role of Universities in Influencing Public Policy in Korea", an introductory session on the APRU Strategic Plan, and thematic sessions based on the proposed priority areas for APRU: Creating Asia-Pacific Global Leaders, Shaping Asia-Pacific Higher Education and Research, and Partnering on Solutions to Asia-Pacific Challenges.
Professor Seung-Yong Hong, Vice-Chair of Presidential Advisory Council on Education, Science & Technology and Chairman of the University Restructuring Committee (Ministry of Education, Science and Technology) gave a keynote on the current state of Korean higher education. This was followed a welcome speech by Professor Byung-Chul Kim, President of Korea University.
Other distinguished speakers at the meeting included Professor Hee Young Paik, Former Minister, Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, President Tae Yun Ha of the National Institute for International Education, and Professor John Endicott, President of Woosong University and Vice-Chancellor of SolBridge International School of Business. They spoke on key challenges facing Korean higher education, globalization, and international relations. During the thematic sessions, APRU Senior Staff panelists shared examples of how their universities are adapting to the evolving challenges of the region as the world becomes increasingly globalized. Senior staff also discussed how APRU could best contribute to addressing these issues through various programs and activities in the context of the new strategic plan.
The Korea Foundation hosted a dinner on March 14 where the Foundation's President, Professor Woosang Kim offered a toast at the event.
The three-day meeting concluded with updates on various upcoming activities in 2012 and early 2013 and a closing plenary which was co-chaired by APRU Secretary General, Dr Christopher Tremewan and the University of Melbourne's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement), Professor Susan Elliott.
