Prof. Jette Hansen Edwards
Professor and Associate Dean of Arts (Education), English, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

I was born in Denmark but immigrated to the United States with my family at the age of 10. When my family immigrated, I spoke only Danish; I became an applied English linguist because of my experiences in learning English as a second language and, eventually, learning to navigate a life between two cultures and languages.

I studied English both for my BA and master’s degrees, eventually earning a PhD in Foreign and Second Language Education from The Ohio State University in 2000. Having lived in Japan in the mid 1990s, I returned to Asia in 2003, taking up a position at the Hong Kong Baptist University as an Assistant Professor in applied linguistics before joining the Department of English at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2006. I have had a long and fruitful career at CUHK, first as an Assistant and then Associate Professor with tenure. I have been a Full Professor since 2017. I served as Head of the Department of English from 2017 – 2023 and am currently serving as Associate Dean of Arts (Education, 2022 – present).

My research focuses primarily on the acquisition and use of a second language sound system (second language phonology) and the social and linguistic factors that foster and constrain acquisition and use. I also study the evolution and use of local varieties of English in Asia, with a particularly focus on Hong Kong English, in use in Hong Kong. My research is primarily sociolinguist and social constructivist in nature.
