Program Summary:

Join a dynamic panel discussion on “The Art of Communication: A Key to Effective Leadership”, featuring mentors from the APWiL (Asia Pacific Women in Leadership) Mentoring Program’s 5th Cohort. These accomplished leaders from across the Pacific Rim will explore essential strategies, challenges, and cultural considerations for leaders aiming to enhance their communication skills. Topics include overcoming bias, building confidence, and navigating high-pressure situations, followed by interactive breakout sessions for personalized learning and Q&A with attendees.

Professor Joanna Regulska (Moderator)
APWiL Co-Chair, Vice Provost and Dean – Global Affairs and Distinguished Professor of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, University of California, Davis

Joanna Regulska, vice provost and dean of Global Affairs and distinguished professor of gender, sexuality and women’s studies at the University of California, Davis, has led large-scale programs that transform institutions, establish partnerships, and substantially improve global services for over 30 years.

Regulska oversees Global Affairs at UC Davis where she strives to provide all students with global learning experiences through a Provost’s Priority of Global Education for All; engage faculty, staff and students with the UN Sustainable Development Goals as part of UC Davis’ commitment to solving global challenges; and help promote understanding and address global inequities.

In 2022, Regulska was honored with the Charles Klasek Award for outstanding service to the field of international higher education from the Association of International Education Administrators. A respected scholar, Regulska’s research concentrates on women’s political activism, grassroots mobilization, decentralization, democracy and democratization, with a focus on Europe and the Caucasus.

Dr. Hong Ching Goh
Professor, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Universiti Malaya

Dr. Hong Ching Goh is currently a professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Malaya. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a Master of Science in Tourism Planning, both from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She pursued her doctoral studies (Geography) at Bonn University, Germany after gaining four years of corporate experience with a leading developer in Malaysia.

Currently, Prof. Goh chairs the Social Advancement and Happiness Research Cluster and leads the Humanities and Social Sciences Group of the Malaysia National Antarctic Research Centre. She is a registered town planner with the Malaysian Institute of Planners and the Board of Town Planners Malaysia.

Prof. Goh has a strong research passion for studying human-environment interactions through an interdisciplinary approach. Initially focused on urban planning and nature-based tourism, her approach has evolved to encompass sustainability, relevance, inclusion, and impact of scales. She investigates the threats and constraints posed by various anthropogenic actions and governance systems on the environment and devises strategies for its safeguarding.

Since 2009, she has secured RM6.9 million in research grants (RM4.95 million from international grant of which RM4.15 million as PI). As a co-investigator, she also helped secure the GBP6.4 million Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) grant in 2017.

To date, she has published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles, 30 book chapters and books, and other 40 publications. She has supervised six PhD students and three master students to completion and oversees 12 ongoing students.

Dr. Patricia Gerber
Associate Professor and Director, Degree Programs for Pharmacists, The University of British Columbia

Dr. Patricia Gerber is a tenured Associate Professor of Teaching in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. In her current role as Director of Degree Programs for Pharmacists, she oversees the Graduate Diploma in Pharmacy Leadership and the Flexible Doctor of Pharmacy Program.

Dr. Gerber obtained her Pharmacy degree from UBC in 1993, followed by completion of a Pharmacy Practice Residency Program at the Children’s & Women’s Health Centre of BC in 1994. She earned a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from UBC in 1997. For almost 15 years, Dr. Gerber served as a Clinical Pharmacist, Education Coordinator, and Residency Coordinator at the Children’s & Women’s Health Centre of British Columbia, providing patient care and mentoring junior pharmacists.

Since joining UBC’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1994, Dr. Gerber has taught courses in pediatric pharmacotherapy, professionalism, ethics, and leadership, while providing educational leadership and mentoring in both undergraduate and graduate programs. In 2017, she designed and launched a leadership course in the UBC PharmD Program, the first of its kind in Canada. This course has been recognized through publications and invitations to speak at national and international conferences. Now in its 8th iteration, the course has a LinkedIn community of practice with over 75 alumni, with whom Dr. Gerber continues to engage and mentor.

Dr. Gerber has been honored with several local and national awards for her teaching and scholarly contributions to education. In the area of educational leadership, she led or co-led the design, development, and implementation of three key programs that have significantly impacted the profession: the entry-to-practice PharmD degree program (launched in 2015), the Flexible PharmD degree program (launched in 2018), and the Graduate Diploma in Pharmacy Leadership program (launched in 2024). These experiences have provided Dr. Gerber with extensive knowledge in navigating the complexities of engaging stakeholders in program design, leading curriculum development and implementation, managing program approval processes within academic and governmental environments, and conducting market research and recruitment for program promotion.

In addition, Dr. Gerber has significant human-resources experience in developing job descriptions, hiring, and managing staff. She has also led national initiatives focused on student leadership development. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Gerber has served as Faculty Advisor to many professional and student groups and has mentored hundreds of students and colleagues both locally and nationally, in formal and informal roles.

Dr. Serena Yang
Vice Chair, Community Engagement, Department of Pediatrics, Chief, Division of General Pediatrics, and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, University of California, Davis

Serena Yang, MD, MPH, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UC Davis Health, completed her pediatric residency and fellowship in Academic General Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital in 2004. During her fellowship, she attained an MPH in International and Family Health at UT Houston School of Public Health.

She is a general pediatrician who provides comprehensive primary care for infants and children from the newborn period through adolescence. She practices a philosophy of collaborating with patients and families to promote the health and wellbeing of children. In Dr. Yang’s medical group practice, she works in a team to partner with patients, families, pediatric medical and surgical specialty providers, mental health providers, schools, and other community agencies to care for a child’s special needs.

Dr. Yang’s academic interests focus on training healthcare professionals, especially for regions with healthcare workforce shortages. Her educational mission focuses on learners all along the health professions pathway, from inspiring K-12 students as they explore health careers, to supporting health professions students, residents, and fellows in their identity formation, to coaching faculty in advanced skill and leadership development. She is committed to increasing diversity among trainees and faculty, and ultimately, the physician workforce to meet the health care needs of diverse populations. She also seeks to establish innovative and sustainable clinical-community partnerships that improve networks of care, community linkages, and systems that advance health equity for all children and families.

Professor Susan Rowland
Vice Provost, The University of Sydney

Professor Rowland is an Australian leader in the field of science education and an internationally recognised expert in the areas of large-scale undergraduate research experiences and science communication. Throughout her career, Professor Rowland has focused on teaching and learning strategy, educational innovation, and improving the student and staff experience through academic professional development.

As Vice Provost, Professor Susan Rowland is responsible for working with the Senior Executive, Deans and Heads of School to oversee enterprise-wide initiatives that support and enhance the academic business of the University. She is a delegate for the Provost in key areas of academic management and operation such as chairing thematic reviews, academic appointment and promotion committees, academic planning and development processes, and gifts administration. Her portfolio includes the University Libraries and the SAGE/Athena Swan initiative.

She currently leads multiple strategic projects of work at the University of Sydney; these relate to academic development, reward, and recognition; academic workforce capability building; and gift administration.
