P4G Nature Forum: Climate Change and Biodiversity

There is ample evidence that climate change affects biodiversity. According to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, climate change is likely to become one of the most significant drivers of biodiversity loss by the end of the century. Climate change is already forcing biodiversity to adapt either through shifting habitat, changing life cycles, or the development of new physical traits. Biodiversity can support efforts to reduce the negative effects of climate change.

Conserved or restored habitats can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus helping to address climate change by storing carbon (for example, reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation). Moreover, conserving intact ecosystems, such as mangroves, for example, can help reduce the disastrous impacts of climate change such as flooding and storm surges. Conservation and management strategies that maintain and restore biodiversity can be expected to reduce some of the negative impacts from climate change.

This event is being held in collaboration with the 2021 P4G Seoul Summit, the first-ever multilateral environmental Summit to be hosted by the Republic of Korea from May 30 to 31, 2021. 2021 is the first year when the international society kicks off its actions to achieve greenhouse gases reduction goals by 2030, as per the Paris Agreement adopted in 2015. The P4G Seoul Summit is the first multilateral summit on the environment, which will further unite our global commitment to carbon neutrality and strengthen climate action to build back better and greener in the post-COVID world. For more information, please visit: https://2021p4g-seoulsummit.kr/index.do
