3rd IIES Graduate Student Forum

Event Date: November 11-12, 2019
Location: Korea University, Seoul, Korea

Conference Website: https://ii-es.com/events/3rd-iies-graduate-student-forum-seoul-november-11-12-2019/
Contact: Julia Colley [email protected]

The forum is co-hosted by Korea University and Nanjing University with support from the IIES. The forum allowed graduate students from IIES member universities to meet and discuss environmental research from various perspectives. Students gave short 5-minute presentations with two slides maximum to present an overview of their research in a way that many people will be able to understand. This is analogous to the three-minute thesis events that are now common in many parts of the world. Greater emphasis was placed on the discussion groups and talks from faculty and industry representatives, rather than the research results of an individual’s projects.

The forum was held in conjunction with the 5th Annual IIES Science and Policy Workshop taking place at Korea University from November 13-14.

IBI Biochar World Congress

Event Date: November 10-14 2019
Location: Korea University, Seoul, Korea

Conference Website: https://biochar-international.org/event/ibi-biochar-world-congress-2019/

The Korea Biochar Research Center and Korea University host the congress together with the International Biochar Initiative, Foshan University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Biochar Research Center, Cornell University, Henan Agricultural University, Shenyang Agricultural University, and The Korean Society of Environmental Biology.

During the recent past, biochar has been popular as a soil amendment for enhancement of soil fertility and quality, removal of various contaminants in the environment and carbon sequestration. Nevertheless, recent researches focusing on biochar have gained more interest towards a wide range of applications in fields of engineering, health care, and life sciences. These studies would lead to a high potential for the commercialization of biochar.

This congress was held with the expectation of a paradigm shift towards the development of the next generation of biochar with more attention towards enhancing the biochar global market. IBI Biochar World Congress provided a unique platform for sharing knowledge on all aspects of biochar among a broad international scientific community, policymakers and industrial personnel.
