Progress in Disaster Scienceis an open-access Journal that aims to report on the substantial progress in disaster research field for the purpose of better integrating disaster research and policy. APRU Multi-Hazards Program and Elsevier will jointly launch the inaugural volume at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in May 2019 in Geneva.

According to APRU’s latest report, between 1990 and 2015, 3.2 billion people were affected and 423.000 lives were lost due to nature disasters. Although, in the last 5 years, over 27,000 Disaster Science papers were published globally, disaster research outcomes have yet to be sufficiently leveraged into practice.

A key part of the Journal’s publication output will see key experts invited to assess and comment on the current trends in disaster research, as well as highlight key papers. The inaugural Volume (and other early issues) will engage a diverse group of academics, senior policymakers, private sector and civil society practitioners, reflecting on the key issues of disaster risk reduction and response or rehabilitation they are engaged in.

The Journal welcomes not only review papers on disaster response, disaster recovery, disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction, but alsooriginal research into new innovations and approaches with emphases on holistic perspectives on disaster research, implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR), multi-stakeholder and implementation-oriented research, demand-driven innovation and innovation-creating demand, and creating a future generation of researchers.

“It is important for the Disaster Science research field to strengthen the collaboration between researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, as well as understand local needs, and facilitate research in countries that are particularly vulnerable to disaster risks,” says Dr. Takako Izumi, Director of APRU Multi-Hazards Program.

Dr. Izumi is the Journal’s Associate Editor. Prof. Rajib Shaw, an active and a long-standing contributor to APRU Multi-Hazards Program, serves as the journal’s Editor-in-Chief. The UNISDR SRSG (Special Representative to Secretary-General), Ms. Mami Mizutori, will pen one chapter of the inaugural volume.
