Over 40% of global natural disasters and 90% of earthquakes occur in the Asia-Pacific, threatening millions of lives and livelihoods, causing widespread infrastructure damage, and economic disruption. In this high-risk region, vulnerability and exposure amplify disaster impacts—making cross-border coordination and knowledge-sharing essential for effective risk reduction, recovery, and resilient development.
Hosted by Tohoku University, the APRU Multi-Hazards Program mobilizes the expertise of member universities to address the shared threat of natural hazards across the Pacific Rim. Through collaborative research, policy engagement, and education, the program supports the implementation of the Sendai Framework and strengthens disaster risk reduction and recovery in vulnerable regions. The initiative is built around three key pillars:
- Annual Symposium – A regional forum for sharing research, innovations, and strategies in disaster risk reduction.
- Education – The Multi-Hazards Summer School equips emerging scholars with hands-on training in disaster science and risk management.
- Inform Policy and Engage Stakeholders – Seminars and workshops that connect academia, government, and civil society to co-develop practical solutions.
