APRU Esports Fellowship Program 3rd Cohort

Led by Tecnológico de Monterrey, the APRU Esports Fellowship Program 3rd Cohort will be a one-month (July 2023) commitment for students who are interested in developing an international Esports network, engaging in next-generation learning experiences and supporting the growth of healthy and vibrant Esports communities.

Activities will take place weekly and via Zoom.

 

Participants

We invite all APRU Member universities to nominate up to 5 undergraduate students to participate in the APRU Esports Fellowship Program 3rd Cohort.

 

Expected outcomes

  • Create an immediate and lasting impact on student communities.
  • Connect students and their communities across borders.
  • Cultivate an alumni network that is accretive to both the fellowship and APRU Esports participating universities.
  • Develop Leadership Competencies.
  • Expand Student-led Campus Initiatives.

Certificate:

  • A certificate will be issued to each participant upon successful completion of the program and its requirements.

Session’s structure

  • 40min speakers’ presentation or panel discussion
  • 20min breakout rooms interaction
  • 30min sharing, briefing and Q&A

Each participating institution should create an internal process for selecting candidates and submit the registration for up to five students and one advisor (advisor is not mandatory).

University representatives are kindly reminded to send the names and email addresses of the nominees to David Quimbayo ([email protected]) and invite the nominated students to complete the online application form here by June 9, 2023.

To be eligible, it is important to meet the following requirements:

  • Be a current undergraduate student of an APRU member university as of July 2023.
  • Have a good command of English.
  • Students currently active in Esports clubs and Gaming activities at participating APRU universities are preferred.

 

– Registration should only be submitted by those authorized by the responsible staff in the universities on the following link.
– Mentors/Supervisors are invited to join. Registration for mentors/supervisors can be submitted in the same link.

Fellow Commitments

  • Become an Esports ambassador for your university.
  • Actively share best practices among fellows.
  • Take an active role in discussing, moderating and leading activities in the sessions.
  • Students must:
    Attend all (4) sessions throughout the program.*
    – Submit final project.*
    – Complete the program’s evaluation survey.*
  • Follow appropriate code of conduct, respecting every participant and their opinions.*

 

*Certificates will only be awarded to those who complete ALL the requirements of the fellowship.

This final project aims to document in audio/visual means (video) the establishment, development, and impact of Esports in the participating universities. We invite you to share specific examples, situations, challenges, and successful experiences you, as a student, and your university have encountered throughout the growth of Esports on your campus.

 

Final project specifications

Type of activity: Team based. One video per university (if you are a unique representative, please produce your video individually).

Language: English or native language with English subtitles.

Delivery Format: Video (via YouTube upload)

Length: Up to 8 minutes

Submission deadline: July 31st, 2023, midnight Hong Kong Time (HKT)

Important notice: No copyrighted materials (music, images, video clips, etc.) may be used for this project unless you own the copyright or have a license to use the materials. The videos will be published on the apru.org website and official YouTube channel.

 

Video content

To build this evidence your video project should include the following topics:

  1. Introduce how and when Esports started at your university, and its growth and development until 2023.
  2. Explain the Esports structure at your university (sports classes, representative teams, intramural tournaments, etc.), as well as the human and material resources available.
  3. If there is an official Esports team in your university, explain its structure, its benefits, commitments, responsibilities, etc. (e.i. training, scholarships, schedules)
  4. If there are internal tournaments on your campus, share their structure, the most popular games played, and who is responsible for organizing the tournaments.
  5. Showcase the designated spaces, if any, where Esports activities take place on your campus.
  6. Share the best outcomes and highlights Esports has brought to your university.
  7. What do you foresee the future of Esports at your university?
  8. Share what you have learned as a person and professional by being part of the esports ecosystem at your University. 
  9. What have you learned in this fellowship program.

 

Lastly, be creative, have fun, include funny videos, anecdotes, etc., and make the most of this experience.

Carlos Ordóñez
National AVP, Student Wellbeing, Tec de Monterrey

Session 1
Well-being in Esports

Carlos Ordóñez has more than 25 years of international experience working in the fields of student advising, well-being, intercultural communication, sexual violence prevention, and DEI. Ordóñez is currently the national AVP, Student Wellbeing at Tec de Monterrey, a multi-campus private educational institution located in Mexico serving over 90,000 students.

Ordoñez is the co-host of Cuida Tu Mente, a podcast by TecSounds with listeners in more than 50 countries; he has trained over 200 staff members at Tec de Monterrey in the active bystander model called Testigo Activo which has reached over 40,000 students nationwide. Ordóñez is also a member of NASPA’s Culture of Respect Advisory Board.

Ordóñez earned a master’s degree in sciences, specializing in Intercultural Communication from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, a bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences from the same institution, and a certificate in The Science of Well-being by Yale University. Also, he has several other certificates in topics such as compassion integrity; diversity and inclusion; conscious leadership; privilege; and leadership, among others.

Ramón Jabes Flores Rocha
Doctor of Chiropractic

Session 1
Well-being in Esports

Ramón Jabes Flores Rocha is a Doctor of Chiropractic from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA with a degree in Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. He has 27 years of experience in the private practice and worked 11 years for the International Olympic Committee in events including Sydney 2000 Olympics, Central American and Caribbean Games El Salvador 2002, Athens 2004 Olympics, Bolivarian games Colombia 2005 and the Panam Games Guadalajara 2011.

Currently, Mr Jabes owns three Chiropractic and Rehab Clinics in the metro area of Monterrey

Charles Fauchet
Co-founder, KIX Esports

Session 2
Networking with Esports companies

Charles has been involved in the gaming and esports industry for 7 years, leading various entrepreneurial projects. Currently, Charles is the co-founder of LeaguePass.gg, a platform supported by Cyberport that assists esports tournament organizers in planning and scaling their events. Before his involvement with LeaguePass, Charles co-founded KIX Team, a professional esports team that competed in the Clash Royale League Asia from 2018 to 2020. Additionally, Charles is a co-founder of KIX Creative, a gaming and metaverse marketing agency that helps brands engage with the next generation of gamers through gaming media, KOLs and metaverse experiences.

Terence Leung
Senior Manager, Digital Entertainment, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited

Terence currently heads the Digital Entertainment cluster of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, taking charge of Cyberport’s public mission in facilitating digital entertainment and esports industry development.  Possessing 20 years of work experience in the digital tech industry, Terence at Cyberport devotes himself to a broad spectrum of domains, including digital entertainment and esports, education technology (EdTech), STEM education, start-up incubation, digital rights management, and digital inclusion, and so forth.  Besides, Terence once represented Cyberport to serve as Secretariats for the eHealth Record Internship Programme, and the District Cyber Centres Alliance. Terence has demonstrated extensive experiences and capabilities in business development, marketing, project management and administration.   

Having strong dedication to serve the industry, Terence has been appointed different roles by various organisations, such as member of advisory panel, vetting committee and organising committee, etc., including Accreditation Exercise panel member for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications; Advisory Peer Group member for the Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Sports and eSports Management of Hong Kong Metropolitan University; External Academic Assessor for Higher Diploma in eSports, The University of Hong Kong School Of Professional and Continuing Education; vetting member for the Hong Kong ICT Awards – Digital Entertainment Award; vetting member for the Hong Kong Game Enhancement and Promotion Scheme; vetting member for the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Industry Fresh Graduate Support Scheme; and member for the Esports Committee of the Hong Kong Football Association, etc.

Terence is passionate about promoting digital tech innovation and application, as well as career development to youth.  He is always invited to be a guest speaker or guest of honor in various esports, youth and tech education events, as well as a judge in different industry awards and competitions, such as Hong Kong ICT Awards – Student Innovation Award, The Greater Bay Area STEM Excellence Award (HKSAR), RoboMaster Youth Tournament, Hong Kong Outstanding IT School Award, and Hong Kong International Student Innovative Invention Contest, etc.

Yupei Zhao
Prof. Media and International Culture, Zhejiang University

Session 3
The future of Esports in the universities. Academic options and scholarships.

Dr Yupei Zhao (PhD in University of Leicester, UK) is an “Hundred Talent Program Young Professor” and doctorial tutor in college of Media and International Culture in Zhejiang University. She is currently vice chair-elected of International Communication Association Popular Media and Culture Division, vice dean of Chinese Society for Science and Technology Journalism in Game and eSports Communication Research Professionals. Co-founder of UK-China Media and Communication Association. Before joining ZJU, she was working as a senior research associate in school of Communication and Design in Sun Yat-sen University. Meanwhile, Yupei Zhao has been invited as senior researcher in Institute of Asia and Pacific Studies, China Policy institute at University of Nottingham (UK), and the Eurasian Sport Industry at Emlyon’s Shanghai Campus, visiting professor in Xi’an-Liverpool University and Beijing Institute of Technology.

Her research interests widely includes mixed-methods use to examine digital culture and platformalization, global communication, media culture and industry. Particularly, she pays more attentions on eSports culture and industry, digital music and culture, fandom culture, media and platformalization. She has a PhD and MA focusing on Political Communication and New Media in University of Leicester (UK) since 2010 to 2016. Thus far, she is PI for twelve research funding projects, and her research has appeared in International Journal of Cultural Studies, Journal of Cultural Economy, International Journal of Communication, Social Science Quarterly, Sage Open, Social media + Society, Media International Australia, popular music and society etc. She got “The Best Paper” Paper Award in both 2020 and 2019 International Communication Association Popular Media and Culture Division, and 2019 European Association for Sport Management.

Glen Tokola
Esports Manager, University of Washington

Glen Tokola is an esports professional with nine years of industry experiences, ranging from administrating premiere tournament productions, operating new spectator tools for mainstream esports titles, and writing for the first original Twitch show. Glen specializes in editorial management and content strategy for gaming audiences.

Previously, Glen was the content director for Tempo, a tier 1 North American esports organization. In this position, Glen drove media initiatives for professional players, influencers, and endemic sponsors through regular video and editorial productions.

As the esports manager for the University of Washington, Glen implements the program’s foundational pillars of community, career, and competition through a student-centered approach, with an emphasis on building a healthy and inclusive gaming community. He is also the advisor for the University of Washington cohort of the APRU Esports Fellowship 2023.

Jennifer Seto
Esports Program Manager, Simon Fraser University

Session 3
The future of Esports in the universities. Academic options and scholarships.

Jennifer’s journey into collegiate esports began part way through her role as Events Coordinator at the SFU Esports Association student club and within a year she reached the position of President.

During her time as one of the main public figures and leader of the club, Jennifer was able to see the positive impact the club had on students, especially for women and other marginalized groups that were able to find a safe space to enjoy their love of gaming with their peers. Then, Jennifer realized how heavily SFUEA impacted students life’s, and provided them a safe space where they could feel welcomed and comfortable being themselves without fear of discrimination.

After graduating from SFU with a Kinesiology degree, Jennifer was offered the position of Esports Program Manager. Though it was a difficult decision at the time, Jennifer is happy to have continued her journey in esports and gaming, making a positive impact on not only the SFU community, but also Canada’s collegiate gaming community.

Ricardo Montes
Fellow MC, Tec de Monterrey

Ricardo is in his last semester of Biomedical Engineering. He started playing competitive League of Legends at college level when he was 15 years old.

After finishing second at a national competition, he was invited to manage an Esports team at TEC de Monterrey. In this role, he created the standards from which scholarship are granted to students that show promise in League of Legends. At that time, he also became president of the student association that manages Esports in his campus.

Ricardo continues playing nowadays and has won two bronce and one silver medal.

Melissa Montemayor
Fellow MC, Tec de Monterrey

Melissa is studying Engineering in Robotics. She has experience as a Twitch Streamer, casted several League of Legends tournaments and learnt everything about setting up new Twitch users and how to guide them through the essential initial steps.

Her favorite games include all of the Legend of Zeldas and Valorant! Also, she has attended the Gamergy in Madrid, where she met several incredible streamers and had a great time playing videogames in the event.

Claudia Rodriguez
Fellow MC, Tec de Monterrey

Claudia is currently studying development of video games at Tec de Monterrey. She first got involved in E-sports thanks to the student association of the campus. She started as a Super Smash Bros competitive player and after a semester she decided to leave the competitive part and help in the administrative arena.

She was vice president of the E-sports student association for a year and during this time she joined the APRU Esports Fellowship Program. Even though she is no longer actively involved in the E-sports student association, her interest continues in this kind of topics.
