President of Universidad de Chile

Rosa Devés graduated in Biochemistry from the Universidad de Chile in 1974 and obtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario (Canada) in 1978. Subsequently, she did postdoctoral studies at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, USA). In 1980 she joined the Department of Physiology and Biophysics of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de Chile, where she taught and did research in the field of cellular physiology, becoming Full Professor in 1998.

Prof. Devés was the first director of the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences, which she
directed in two five-year periods (1990 – 1995 and 2002 – 2006). The program has been one of the most influential in the country in the field of biological sciences. She also served as deputy director of the then newly founded Institute of Biomedical Sciences (1997 – 2000), which represented a profound transformation of the basic area of the School of Medicine. Her research in the field of cellular physiology, specifically on the mechanisms of transport in biological membranes, had international impact and was recognized with her incorporation as a Corresponding Member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences in 2002.

In senior university management, she served as Director of Graduate and Postgraduate Studies
between 2006 and 2010, and as the first woman Prorector in the history of the University, between 2010 and 2014. Both responsibilities were undertaken under the presidency of Professor Víctor Pérez. In 2014 she joined the management team of President Ennio Vivaldi as Vice President of Academic Affairs, a position she held until 2022.

In the external political arena, she participated in the Andrés Bello Cultural Association during the 1980s, which was installed to defend the university under the dictatorship, becoming its President in 1986. In Higher Education, her contribution to the deepening of equity and inclusion, and the creation of the special access route “Educational Equity Priority Access System” in 2011, is especially noteworthy. This program has made it possible for a large number of students from the public school system to enter the Universidad de Chile driving an important institutional transformation, as well as other equity initiatives at the University. In 2015, she was part of the Advisory Council for Higher Education Reform of the Ministry of Education.

Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a broad commitment to education at all levels. She is founder, together with Professor Jorge Allende, of the Inquiry-Based Science Education Program (ECBI) for Basic Education. The program arises from a cooperation with Science Academies internationally, and public schools in Chile and other countries. In 2013, the Mexican Ministry of Public Education and Innovation in Science Education, A.C. recognized its contribution to the scientific training of students and teachers through ECBI programs. Since 2015, she has also been a member of the International Committee of the La main à la pâte Foundation, France, which promotes innovation in science education in that country.

On May 12, 2022, Professor Devés became the first woman President of the Universidad de Chile.
